What you need to know about hair transplants
Hair loss is a completely natural and normal part of the ageing process, especially for men. However, hair can be a big part of our identity, so it can be understandably traumatic when it starts to recede, thin out, or disappear altogether. And while there are several recognised treatments for significant hair loss, none are quite as comprehensive as a hair transplant.
In short, a hair transplant is a type of acute surgery that involves moving existing and active hair follicles on your head to fill another area with no hair or thinning hair. A transplant can help counter the effects of natural hair loss, increasing the density of hair follicles in balding areas and returning the appearance of a full head of hair.
There are two main types of hair transplant – follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUSS involves the removal of a singular strip of skin from the scalp, usually taken from the back of the head, which is then divided into small grafts containing one to a few hairs. FUE, on the other hand, involves individual follicles being removed from the back of the head one by one.
From there, both procedures are generally very similar – the surgeon will clean and numb the area of the scalp that will be receiving the transplant, create holes or slits in the skin, and carefully implant each individual graft into a hole.
The healing process after a hair transplant involves several days where you’ll likely be expected to wear bandages over your scalp and may need to take pain medication. After a couple of weeks, the implanted hair will fall out before the regrowth period starts, sometimes assisted with a hair growth stimulant such as minoxidil.
Hair transplants are invariably preceded by a consultation with a trichologist, who will assess your hair loss and determine the right kind of transplant for you as well as providing an estimate of results.
